Sulphur and Pyrites
Sulphur is a bright, lemon
yellow, abundant, tasteless, odourless, multivalent, non-metallic
element. This very soft mineral occurs in many sulphide and
sulphate minerals and even in native form (especially in volcanic
regions).
The largest initial end-use of sulphur is the production of
sulphuric acid, accounting for 90% of both recovered and mined
elemental sulphur. Sulphuric acid is used in many basic chemical
processes, but its major consumption (more than 60%) is for
the manufacture of phosphoric acid to produce fertilisers
