Outokumpu, Finland

Special Exhibition 2008 - Outokumpu Mine Museum

Miner's day - and after hours - seen and depicted by German artists in 18th
and 19th Century

This special Exhibition will open on June 2nd and close on August 31st at the
Outokumpu Mine Museum. The displays are in Finnish, English and in German.
An 'underground tour', scenes of various work places and methods. The artist is
Professor Eduard Heuchler (1801 – 1879). He started as a helper-miner and
became the teacher in drawing in Bergakademie Freiberg, and an architect as well.
Heuchler tells a story of a thousand words with each of his drawings, in spectacular
detail, describing the methods of working, tools, even working positions, more
than would be possible verbally.
Another set of drawings are colored pictures of various mining professions in their
uniforms in Freiberg 1769. In the 1800th century mining and metal industry was
blooming in the Erzgebirge area, Germany.
