Ores and Concentrates: An industry approach to EU Hazard Classification

Aimed at the mining and metals sector, this publication provides broad guidance on the classification of ores and concentrates (O&Cs) using the Globally Harmonised System of Classification and Labelling (GHS) as required in the EU by the new CLP Regulation (EC No 1272/2008).

The extraction and processing of mineral ores to create concentrates is the primary step in the life cycle of minerals and metals, and hazard classification and labelling is one of the first stages in ensuring that risks associated with production, transport and storage are properly controlled.

The guidance is intended to promote the continued development of sound scientific approaches for the classification of O&Cs and will assist the industry in achieving a harmonised approach to classification and labelling.

While we recognize that classifying O&Cs is ultimately an individual company’s responsibility, this document presents a framework that can be applied towards the goal of achieving a more consistent approach to classification.
