Mining Techniques

The choice of techniques to extract and process mineral resources depends on various factors, in particular, the location of the deposit and the characteristics of the ore. Mining techniques are a key element without which Europe would not be in a position to benefit from its mineral wealth. Responsible exploitation of that wealth plays a crucial role in creating economic growth.

The European mining industry has the necessary know-how to implement and further develop mining techniques enabling sustainable extraction and ore processing under technically and economically viable conditions and meeting stringent environmental standards.

Of particular importance is the Reference Document on the Best Available Techniques (BAT) on the Management of Tailings and Waste-rock in Mining Activities. This document, called for by Directive 2006/21/EC on the management of waste from the extractive industries, provides examples of BAT for mineral processing, tailings and the waste-rock management of ores.

Further examples of mining techniques are provided below.
