Euromines member LKAB has partnered with SSAB and Vattenfall to create HYBRIT, a joint venture company that is working to be the first in the world to create fossil-free steel at the industrial level. HYBRIT recently broke ground for their pilot factory, beginning construction that is expected to be completed in 2020. The factory is located in Luleå, Sweden.

Rather than using coking coal, this steel-production process would use hydrogen, replacing carbon dioxide emissions with water as a by-product. HYBRIT could potentially reduce the total carbon dioxide emissions in Sweden by 10% and in Finland by 7%. This project began in 2016 and HYBRIT’s plan is to have a fully-developed industrial process operating by 2035.
