An independent KU Leuven study, commissioned by the EU industry, was launched today in Brussels. The study is looking at how much metal Europe could mine and refine domestically. In his keynote speech, Thierry Breton, European Commissioner for Internal Market highlighted “Europe is taking its industrial destiny into its own hands including the area of raw materials.”

At Euromines General Assembly on 5th April 2022 the “EUROMINES STANDS FOR SUSTAINABLE MINING IN EUROPE FOR EUROPE” carta was approved. Euromines supports the Paris Agreement and the EU climate target of net-zero emissions by 2050. To reach this goal, sustainable and resilient European value chains are necessary, firmly based on sustainable raw materials. To promote fair and sustainable development Euromines members support the EU principles for sustainable raw materials supply (published on 6th September 2021).

Zinc with a low climate footprint becomes a reality

Euromines congratulates its member company Boliden which has started sales of zinc with a low climate footprint. The new product emits less than 1 tonne of carbon dioxide emissions per tonne of zinc, compared with the industry average of 2.5 tonnes. Low carbon zinc will stand for 18 percent of Boliden's total zinc production.

Rising Energy Prices: Euromines takes action

In light of the continuously high energy prices on the electricity and gas markets, Euromines sent a letter to the presidents of the European Commission, the European Council and the European Parliament as well as the Director of the EU Agency of Energy Regulators (ACER). Euromines sounded alarm that without appropriate action, these price-hikes will forestall investments into decarbonization, reduce international competitiveness of EU mining companies and jeopardize the Green Deal as a sustainability and growth programme on both objectives.

The climate transition requires access to metals and minerals. Europe has a greater need for metals than the world around it, given our high ambitions for the climate transition. Euromines would like to congratulate our Swedish colleagues from Svemin on an excellent report 'Climate ambitions and metal needs – opportunities for Sweden and the Swedish mining industry'. The English version of this report was officially launched last week during the Svemin's Autumn Summit 2021, part of the Raw Materials Week 2021.
